Definitions / Additional Information
Viruses, spyware and adware are all forms of malware (a shortened form of “malicious software”). They are programs designed to run on your computer without your consent. They are typically installed accidentally or via stealth and once present, can basically do whatever the program author designs them to do.
Some examples of malware:
viruses – so named because of their ability to replicate themselves and spread to other machines, some semi-recent examples are the melissa and i love you viruses.
Spyware – a program that resides upon your computer that collects information about you (websites you visit, passwords you type in, etc.) without your knowledge. Normally, the data collected will be sent or uploaded to a remote server to be exploited for nefarious purposes later. A keylogger is an example of a spyware program.
Ransomware – Ransomware is a type of malicious software that encrypts your computer files, making them inaccessible. Once your files are encrypted, the attackers demand a ransom payment in exchange for providing the decryption key. If you don’t pay the ransom, you may lose access to your files permanently.
Adware – a program that automatically displays advertisements to the user without permission. Pop-ups and the user’s web browser are common advertisement delivery mechanisms.
